We know them as Gargoyles, an ancient race that has one purpose. They watch and stand guard over humans. That is until “the trouble”, an ancient conflict that threatened to tear apart the fragile alliance between our two races, veiled by the misty years… until now.
“Guardians” begins with Shauna Fitzgerald, the daughter of an Irish American Steel Magnate, at age ten, a victim of kidnappers who are themselves killed by a mysterious creature, leaving Shauna traumatized and plagued by anger and broken relationships. She is chosen to be the caretaker of the family castle in Ireland. Her father hopes she will find the peace she has been looking for. There she meets Father Dougherty, a priest who, like Shauna, was rescued by the mysterious creatures. She also meets David, the local constable, and Clancy, the local troublemaker who declares that caretakers are neither needed nor wanted there. Clancy plots to do away with Shauna only to have the Guardians intervene once again, and once again, killing her would be attackers. Shauna is convinced that she will never be at peace until she meets Michael, the head of the clan of Guardians. She learns the secret of the Guardians and about Gofalwr, Michael’s brother.
Gofalwr is bitter about the deaths of his brother and father at the hands of humans long ago and the perception of the Guardians as monsters. He decides to kill the last of the humans who know of the existence of the Guardians and to live out his days in peace. The decision leads to a titanic struggle between Michael and his brother. The battle draws in Shauna, David and Father Dougherty, ending at the very birthplace of the “trouble”. The bitter sweet ending brings the peace that Michael and Shauna have sought at the price of blood and family. The two now find their family and destinies at Castle Fitzgerald. They are bound by the past. They are bound by blood.
Guardians is an intelligent horror-drama that melds one of America’s most persistent and popular legends and motifs with powerful emotion and gripping drama.
