“OIF-The Movie” documents the spiritual and emotional journey of Lieutenant Colonel Minnelli, a National Guard Officer who volunteered for duty in Iraq out of patriotism and a desire to “see the elephant”. Instead, he finds a world of personality driven decision making and bureaucracy, removed from the “real war” he sought to find.
He becomes Garrison Commander of a small outpost near Baghdad that houses the character filled organization whose job it is to search for chemical weapons. There, through Hazeem, a local engineer, he learns of the existence of a secret palace, beneath one of Saddam’s other residences that may just hold the secrets of Saddam’s regime. He assembles a team to unravel the mystery. It is composed of Master Sergeant Deathgrip, a man who truly lives for war and is a personal friend of Timothy McVey. The team also includes Aumiller, a sailor who has been at sea for most of his life (mentally, that is), and Lawson, Americana persona, a kid who just wants his parents to be proud. The final touch comes from Amman, the nephew of a local Sheik, a type A adolescent who learned to drive by watching demolition derby. Yep, the gang’s all here.
Together, the team battles a group of bumbling insurgents who don’t really want to be insurgents. That is until the reluctant terrorists meet Mustafa. Mustafa is truly one of the faithful who lives to kill American soldiers. He wants to make a name for himself and seizes upon the opportunity presented by the supposed secret palace to pursue his own private holy war. He coerces the would be ex-insurgents to become suicide bombers. They turn out be failures at even that, but the stage is set for the battle of the five armies, a confrontation that will give Minnelli his taste of war, Mustafa his paradise, Hazeem his revelation and Aumiller…well, Aumiller thinks it’s cool.
